Makalu Region
Trekking in the Makalu Region, protected by Makalu Barun National Park (established in 1992, covering 2,330 sq. km.), is located just 19 km southeast of Mt. Everest. The Makalu Region offers an organic and natural trekking and expedition experience. Trekkers can explore the Makalu Base Camp, the foundation of the world’s fifth highest peak, Mt. Makalu (8,463m). The region also features the spectacular Chamlang Himal and Barun Valley, often considered gems of this off-the-beaten-path destination.
Makalu Region trekking requires good stamina and fitness. The route from the southern side, including camping, is one of the most adventurous trekking experiences in Nepal. Along the trek, you will witness rugged and snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including:
- Mt. Makalu: 8,463m
- Mt. Chamlang: 7,319m
- Mt. Baruntse: 7,129m
- Mera Peak: 6,654m
- Several other unnamed snow-capped peaks
The Makalu Region offers a wide range of climatic and altitudinal variations, providing exposure to diverse habitats with unique flora and fauna. The park contains plants from all major ecological zones — tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, alpine, and sub-alpine. Makalu Barun National Park is home to rare and endangered wildlife and over 3,000 species of flowering plants, including 25 species of rhododendron and hundreds of orchid varieties.
Highlights along the trek include the sacred Salpa Pokhari lake and Salpa Bhanjyang, the highest trekking point at 3,350 meters, offering spectacular mountain scenery. Due to the low number of trekkers, accommodations are limited, but the local people — including Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and other ethnic groups — are friendly, humble, and welcoming. They maintain their rich traditions, language, and cultural heritage.
Popular trekking routes in the Makalu Region include:
- Makalu Base Camp Trek
- Arun Valley Trek
- Sherpani Col Pass Trek
Trekkers often reach the region via road, following the route Biratnagar → Dharan → Hile (6–7 hours), or by flying directly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar for a faster approach.
