“In the colourful tapestry of Nepal’s festivals, each thread is woven with stories of triumph, traditions, and togetherness. From the vibrant hues of Holi to the illuminating spirit of Tihar, Nepal’s celebrations are a testament to the rich cultural heritage that unites communities in joy, reverence, and the shared embrace of diversity.

Nepal, a country rich in cultural diversity and traditions, celebrates a myriad of festivals throughout the year, each deeply rooted in religious and social significance. One of the most prominent and widely celebrated festivals in Nepal is Dashain, also known as Vijaya Dashami. This Hindu festival extends over 15 days and marks the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The festivities include elaborate worshipping ceremonies, family gatherings, and the exchange of blessings and gifts. Another significant festival is Tihar, also known as Deepawali or the festival of lights.

Spanning five days, Tihar honours various animals, including crows, dogs, and cows, as well as the goddess of wealth, Laxmi. Houses are adorned with oil lamps, colourful rangoli, and garlands, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. These festivals not only provide an opportunity for religious observance but also serve as a time for family reunions, cultural performances, and the strengthening of social bonds, making them an integral part of Nepal’s vibrant and diverse cultural tapestry.

Nepal is home to several festivals, apart from the famous Dashain and Tihar festivals, which are a reflection of the country’s cultural diversity. Holi, or the festival of colours, is celebrated with great enthusiasm, where people throw coloured powders and water at each other as a symbol of the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. Indra Jatra, a festival celebrated in Kathmandu, involves raising the magnificent Yosin, a ceremonial pole, and performing traditional dances and rituals. The New Year’s festival, known as Nepali New Year or Navavarsha, is celebrated with enthusiasm and is a time for reflection, renewal, and new beginnings.

Nepal is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups, each with its unique festivals that add layers of cultural richness to the festive calendar. Some of these festivals include Maghe Sankranti, Losar, and Teej. These festivals not only offer a glimpse into the religious and cultural heritage of the country but also help promote unity, tolerance, and understanding among the people of Nepal. This makes Nepal a truly enchanting destination for those looking for an authentic cultural experience.

Maghe Sankranti is one of the important Nepalese festivals observed on January 1st, according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists. It is also recognized as ‘Makar Sankranti’ in India. The word Sankranti is derived from Sanskrit, which defines the transmigration of one Rashi (Zodiac Sign) to another. According to astrology, on this day, the sun is believed to leave its southern position and begin its journey northward towards the Tropic of Cancer. This festival indicates the end of Poush along with the heart-wrenching winter and welcomes the warm weather to bring prosperity and good health.

Is it related to Hindu mythology?

Once, a merchant in Bhaktapur (Bhadgaun) found the idol of Lord Vishnu beneath the seeds while searching for a clue to never run out of his stock. Since then, the idol has been worshipped as TilMadhav Idol. It is believed to bring food, prosperity, and wealth to Bhaktapur.

On this day King Bhisma (Bhismapitamaha) closes his eyes lying on the bed of arrows discovering the words of wisdom of life and death in the famous battle of Mahabharat. He was the grandfather of two families Kauravas and Pandas, and the son of Ganga.

It is believed that if a person dies on the day of MagheSankranti, the deceased will achieve heaven; the soul will procure peace and blessed by rebirth.

How is the festival celebrated?

The day is started with a morning holy bath in the rivers. It is the ritual of removing ills and evils from their own body and mind. You will see the devotees taking a holy bath in a freezing temperature without hesitation at the scheduled river locations around the country.

  • Sankhamul at the Bagmati, Lalitpur
  • Gandaki/Narayani river basin at Triveni, near the Indian border
  • Devghat near Chitwan
  • Ride on the Kali Gandaki
  • Koshi River basin at Dolalghat, on the Sun Koshi

Nepalese people feast themselves with the foods which keep their body warm and healthy. Food items like Tilladdoos (sesame cakes), Chaku (molasses), Ghee (clarified butter), Sweet Potatoes, Khichari (a mixture of rice and lentils), and green leaf spinach are the favorites. The people also prefer to take a massage with Sesame oil.

Maghe Sankranti is one of the biggest festivals in the Tharu community. The day is also celebrated as the New Year in Kailali, Kanchanpur, Banke, Bardiya, and Dang districts. On this day they discuss the mistakes made and handover the duties as the realization for the mistakes. They also plan for the upcoming year with the involvement of the family. Traditional Cultural shows are performed on this day.
